Steve Heinemann in memoriam (1939 - 2014)
With deep sympathy for his family, friends and colleagues, the RIKEN Brain Science Institute community was greatly saddened by the recent passing of Stephen F. Heinemann, Professor in the Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Prof. Heinemann was a giant in the biomedical research community, particularly in neuroscience, where he made seminal discoveries on the molecular basis of synaptic function. Befitting of a man with global awareness, personal generosity, and dedication to the growth of science in society, Prof. Heinemann played key roles at various stages of BSI's rise to prominence. He was a member of the Brain Science Advisory Council in 2009 and 2011, the latter as Chair, where his leadership helped to consolidate the institute's scientific direction toward neural circuit genetics under then incoming and current Director Susumu Tonegawa. He also served on the RIKEN Advisory Council in 2011. While these events were a small part of his scientific oeuvre, his work was influential for BSI's expanding global presence. BSI joins the global research community in remembering a scientist of integrity.
