Research Field

We investigate how the balance between neural stem cell self-renewal and neuron-fate choice is maintained; and how subsequent neuron differentiation pathways are controlled in order to create diversity in neuron form and function. Research scientist positions

We seek 1-2 candidates interested in the following project areas:
1) How is the neurogenetic program modified during the differentiation of different neuron classes to produce a wide variety of dendrite arbor shapes?
2) What features of the neuro-differentiation program are reactivated during neuron regeneration after injury?
3) How do epigenetic mechanisms shape the output of the neurogenetic programs that control stem cell identity and neuron differentiation?

Techniques we use include: genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and live-in vivo imaging, using Drosophila and mouse.


Applications from highly motivated candidates with backgrounds in genetics, molecular biology, developmental biology, and/or neuroscience are invited. In addition, high quality and enthusiastic applicants from related fields in natural science may be considered.

Work location

RIKEN Brain Science Institute (2-1 Hirosawa, Wako, Saitama, Japan) is situated in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Salary and benefits

  1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 7 years of employment.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time.
  3. The employee’s period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
